It is normal to be concerned about the health of your baby. Many doctors warn mothers against using jacuzzis, saunas or long baths because they can increase the mother's internal temperature. A study published in the L.A. Times in 2003 showed that on average, students' internal temperature rises by approximately half a degree in a Bikram Yoga class.
Many women before you have practiced the Bikram series in the heat for the entire length of their pregnancy with no ill effect to their children. In fact, Eight Weeks to Optimal Health recommends daily steam saunas for pregnant women.
Trust your body. The pregnant body is highly tuned and alert to potential dangers to the fetus. During pregnancy you sweat more readily too keep internal temperature from rising.
If you are still concerned, try bringing a thermometer into class with you and testing your temperature throughout the class.
The series was even put on video for women to practice at home. To find your own copy, visit Bikram Yoga International Headquarters.
RAJASREE'S PREGNANCY YOGAVHS: Video
"I wholeheartedly recommend this video to all my patients. This unique system of yoga relieves the stress factors associated with pregnancy and provides relaxation and natural conditioning for mother and unborn child. The mother builds and maintains abdominal strength mediating lower back pain. This whole body approach aids the mother and child in achieving a safer pregnancy and delivery with a faster post-natal recovery for the mother."
