After your first Bikram class, what was your impression? |
What drives you to continue to practice? What keeps bringing you back? |
|
I think I was somewhat prepared for the intensity of the first class. My brother started Bikram a couple of years ago and had been trying to get me into it. When I finally decided to start, he made sure I knew what to expect. As the instructors often say to the newbies, all you need to do is stay in the room. So that is what I focused on, staying in the room. It was after the second class the next day that I realized how intense, but rewarding, it could be. I did 3 classes in a row, and by the third class, I knew this was something that I wanted to continue.

The sweat!! I love to sweat in this class. It sounds gross, but it's true. I love the feeling I get after class. I love feeling stronger. I love feeling more flexible.
|
What are some of the benefits and changes you've seen in yourself?
|
What is your favorite posture in the series and why? |
|
One of the biggest changes I have seen is my flexibility. I used to do gymnastics as a kid, recreational, not competitive. I was quite limber even into high school. I am almost back to that state with my body.
Also, I have seen a tremendous change in my running. I hate running; I'm not a runner. My body is built for swimming, not running. I have noticed that running is not such a chore, it's somehow easier.

They change every week!
Half-moon and Awkward- because I'm getting good at them.
Standing Head-to-Knee and Standing Bow- those are challenging, but I love the little improvements I make.
Camel and Rabbit - actually, I don't like camel until AFTER rabbit. It's the combination of the two my body likes. I love the feeling coming out of rabbit.

What is your greatest challenge about the yoga? Yourself? |
What advice can you give to a 1st timer after they complete the class? |
|
Balance. For someone who did gymnastics for years, I'm embarrassed to say that I have terrible balance! I know a lot of it has to do with strength, but it makes poses like Triangle and Standing Separate-leg Head-to-Knee extremely difficult for me.
|
The first class sucks. It's hard. It's hot. You feel like you can't breathe. I was shaking uncontrollably in almost every posture my first class. Don't focus on what everyone else can do. Take full advantage of the first 10 days, do as many as you can.

Is there anything you would like to add? |
